rml Engineering, based in Hamilton, is a multi disciplinary engineering company specialising in automating production lines. They established their unique Success Formula, and it continues to be an integral part of their organisation - (read about it on their website).
Success Formula worked with the rml team to create their own unique change programme, aiming to break down the silo’s of the three business units which were effectively competing, and to build a united company culture. This programme also worked to increase productivity through team work.

Increasing productivity and becoming an employer of choice
VALUE TO TEAM and BUSINESS
The resulting programme (shown visually above) represented the genetics of their organisation and enabled them to deliver the desired goals of the business. rml realised a number of benefits, including greater business unit cohesiveness, strong employee branding, improved communication and a number of other cultural benefits.
They were able to improve project management performance (on budget, on time, to spec) by over 23%, and the team quickly realised the impact of work/life balance (and no. of hrs worked) had on performance and therefore could continually addressed the right issues to work smarter, not harder!
Before undertaking this programme rml were struggling to get more than 2 – 3 people applying for job vacanices. They reported six months after implementing the Success Formula change programme, that they were now getting between 10 – 15 applicants, and they believe this increase was a direct result of the culture changes in their business, and word of mouth amongst the NZ job market that rml was becoming an employer of choice.
SUSTAINING THE CHANGE
rml have found lots of ways that they have continued to use their base formula. Their principles are physically represented in large frames displayed in their coffee room, providing a strong visual reminder of the behaviour expected at work. They have also used a book about their Formula as a rapport building tool as they expand into relationship driven business markets, such as China, Japan and India.
"Stephen Covey's book 'The 8th habit' became a life changing experience for me. So many of the things he wrote about were part of my philosophy ever if I had not expressed myself with the same depth and clarity. The overriding message was to involve everyone in the organisation to achieve not only the best for the individual, but also the best possible outcome for the organisation.
This system provided a practical method to follow that strategy. RML involved everyone in the organisation in developing and implementing our formula for success. We are proud of the outcome from that process and we look forward to the benefits that will follow from regularly reviewing our performance against those goals."
