What is Traction?

Traction is a specialised Transport and Logistics programme to engage staff and measure perception of operational and safety performance using our unique formula, and then focus everyone on constructive improvement. Traction is designed to help problem solve safety culture; it doesn't just test the existence of policy/process, but instead focuses on current practice and beliefs.

Traction 360 degree insights and benchmarks, together with tailored training modules, provide a platform for people to solve current business challenges. The consequent interventions and training are practical, solution orientated and designed to both further engage teams and build business skills.

What is the benefit to an operator of doing Traction?

You may have the safety policies and procedures in place to be health and safety compliant, but are they being followed properly? Are they really understood? Are new staff being trained correctly when on-boarded?

When it comes to risk management and safety, changing equipment and systems is just the beginning. When a culture of safety is respected and valued by everyone in your business, it becomes the backbone of high performance. People and behavioural change are what will really shift safety culture and help lift health & safety standards.

How will this improve my business?

Traction helps you understand your safety and operational performance (across roles and branches), where you perform well, your limiters/opportunities for improvement and where you sit compared to others in the transport and logistics industry. Our expert facilitators then work with you on solving priority challenges (bringing industry best practices, planning tools and templates, and rolling up our sleeves to help).

Twelve years in the making and with close collaboration from government, industry leaders, and international best practice professionals - Traction is a program designed to help problem solve your safety culture. We want to help you to get traction and gear up your business.

What service options does Traction offer and how long does it take?

There are three options available within the offering.

‍Traction Swift, starts to understand key challenges, by conducting a 360-degree company-wide survey using the unique formula, and unpacking your results and recommended actions. All reports include industry benchmarking information. This takes between 5 - 10 hours of a leaders’ time and 15 minutes for each staff member (to do the survey).

The full Traction programme follows on from this and includes a customised onsite workshop, focused on solving current business challenges, offering a number of coaching options. This workshop can involve a variety of people from different parts of your business.

‍Traction Plus follows on from this with six hours of tailored coaching (to be used as the client chooses) to help implement change, and a pulse check half way through the year to monitor progress.

Traction is intended to be an ongoing programme, with annual measurement enabling continuous staff engagement and improvement. In subsequent years the fee for service programme components will continue to be tailored to meet your current needs.

For larger and complex clients, Traction Enterprise will be discussed, with is a customized application of the Traction programme.

Is this just another risk survey?

No. Risk surveys and programmes are great for evaluating the safety processes and policies in place but do not tell us if your people walk the safety talk. Traction looks at the application and execution of those things and is a far deeper insight with the ability to help tackle change.

Can Traction work in a COVID19 environment and/or remotely?

We are aware of the current limitations in customers’ working environment as a result of CO-VID19. As elements of the Traction propositions typically involving face to face on-boarding and attendance on site, we have adapted the proposition to support remote delivery.

Why does NZI offer and for selected customers fund the Traction program?

As a specialist in transport and logistics, NZI purpose is to “make your world a safer place”. They are bringing something unique to the industry, leveraging deep specialist knowledge. NZI is looking for new ways to add value to customers to ensure safer drivers, better businesses and a safer industry.

They have worked in partnership with Success Formula for more than 13 years.

Traction is a fee for service offering for NZI clients, separate to premiums and the insurance process. A customer of NZI could be eligible to take part in Traction, Traction Swift and Traction Plus at no cost – enquiries to the Fleet Risk Management team.

What type of companies use Traction?

Traction has been rolled out to over 140+ businesses throughout Australia and NZ; these range in size, task (from carriers of bulk freight, livestock, dangerous goods to civil construction and manufacturing/distribution companies) and business structure (corporate through to family owned).

We typically work with businesses with 15+ powered units, often family run, and those experiencing significant change, such as growth, new technology or performance challenges.

Will Traction impact my insurance?

Traction is separate to the insurance process, and the information is not used to set premium prices. The results are for the benefit of the customer to improve their business and the Traction service is there to help.

Implementing steps to improve the operation, the safety processes and culture will have a positive impact on your claims however. The program aims to reduce risk, improve equipment care and create better safety outcomes, all of which can lead to a reduction of claims – reducing premium pressure.

Brokers are welcome to be involved at all stages of the programme too.

What data is collected through the Traction programme?

We kick off the programme with a survey to help us understand what is working well, and what opportunities exist to improve company culture and how policies and practices are being followed. The Traction survey asks staff (and customers if you wish to invite them) 30 questions in total. Each section has a scoring question, followed by a comment question for free text. This survey is 100% anonymous to the company, and can be shared either via an anonymous weblink, text message, or sent to an email address.

It is normal for us to ask which depot/branch they work from most of the time, and what role they do most of the time. This demographic information helps us break down the results to make them more meaningful, and produce industry benchmark reports – but again not to identify individuals. The anonymity is important so that staff feel confident to respond honestly.

We will not reveal who has completed the survey to you, or your team in any circumstance, but through the scoring period provide regular updates of no’s of responses and have a variety of techniques to encourage increased participation.

How is data used?

We use the survey data to analysis what is going well and areas for improvement, and share these insights and our recommendations with you in a Traction report. The comments questions give us insight into specific areas to improve, and ideas about what can be done.

We will only break our data down into categories where there are 10 responses or more. This again is to protect the anonymity of the respondents. Any untrue or outlier comments will only be seen by senior management when the reports are presented. It will be at your discretion how feedback is given to staff, but it is very rare that the comments are shared widely. More likely you will use these with discretion amongst the management team only.

When we commence the programme we will start with an initial meeting asking the senior leader for objectives, expectations and their key concerns or focus areas. This information is not shared with anyone beyond your facilitator and is purely used to tailor the programme to ensure we get the best outcomes for you.

It will be your choice if you share this with your broker, or wish for them to be involved when the programme is rolled out.

How is data collected/stored?

For data collection we use an Enterprise package of Survey Monkey, which comes with some of the highest data security features designed.

For data processing we use a proprietary visualisation tool, hosted on world leading Amazon servers, with records spread across 4 countries. Our database is backed up nightly in AWS Oregon, and 45 minutes later the snapshot is copied to AWS Sydney. In 12 years in business we have never had an IT or data security breach
